사북의 기억 : 구술이 역사학에 주는 가능성
사북사건은 사건의 실증보다 이데올로기적 의미부여가 먼저 됨으로써 사건의 다양 한 측면이 가려져 있었다. 이에 본고에서는 ‘사북사태’ 혹은 ‘사북항쟁’을 시간의 흐름 속에서 일어난 하나의 사건으로 국면화시켜 그 이데올로기적 성격을 최대한 배제한 뒤 구술자들을 통해 사북사건을 어떻게 재평가 할 수 있을지 답을 구하고자 하였다. 이에 문헌자료에서 시작하는 것이 아닌 구술자료에서 시작해 사북사건을 재구성하고, 면담의 초점 역시 사건의 과정과 피해상을 드러내는데 국한된 ‘증언’에서 벗어나는 방 식을 택하고자 하였다. 이번 사북사건 관련자 구술을 통해 구술이 역사학에 주는 많은 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다. 본고에서는 특히 기존연구와 차별점을 발견하였던 두 가 지 쟁점을 다루었다. 먼저 기존연구에서 이분법적으로 분리되어있던 노동자와 간부의 관계가 이번 구술을 통해 상당히 복합적인 관계를 형성하고 있었다는 것을 발견하였 다. 또한 기존 연구에서는 언급되지 않은 사북사건 당시의 폭력과 일탈행위가 ‘해방행 위’였으며 그것이 탄광촌의 일상문화에서 야기되었을 가능성을 찾았다. 하나의 사건이 개인의 생애에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지 살피는 것은 역사적 사실을 ‘사건’이 아닌 ‘인간’에 초점을 맞추도록 해준다. 특히 사북사건을 경험한 개인의 생애 를 통해 이데올로기적 해석과 실제 사건의 영향 사이에 괴리가 있음을 알 수 있는데, 본고에서 살펴본 구술자들의 경험과 생애는 그간 사북사건을 정의해온 ‘80년대 노동자투쟁의 발화점’, 또는 ‘ 사태’나 ‘항쟁’으로는 전혀 설명할 수 없었다. 이와 같은 구술 을 통해 역사학은 사건을 재해석 할 수 있는 다양한 관점과 여러 연구과제의 가능성 을 확인할 수 있다.

Memory of Sabuk : The Possibilities of Oral Statements to History
Adding an ideological meaning to the Sabuk incident preceded its proof, hiding various aspects of the incident. Hence, this paper aimed to find out how narrators can reevaluate the Sabuk incident, after converting the ‘Sabuk situation’ or ‘Sabuk resistance’ into a single incident that occurred in a course of time and excluding the ideological characteristic as much as possible. This paper intended to reconstruct the Sabuk incident, starting from oral data, not literature materials, and select a way of getting the most out of ‘testimonies’ which are confined to revealing the process and damages of the incident. The oral statements by people involved in the Sabuk incident showed that oral statements give many possibilities to history. This paper especially dealt with two issues differentiated from existing studies. The first issue was that relations between workers and executives were dichotomically separated in previous studies, but oral statements in this paper showed that they were formed a complex relation. The second issue was that violence and deviant behaviors at the time of the Sabuk incident were not mentioned in the previous studies, but in this paper they were considered ‘liberation behaviors’ which could have been caused by the daily culture of coal mining villages. Investigation of how an incident affects an individual's life helps us focus on the ‘human’ rather than the ‘incident’ of historical facts. In particular, the life of the individual who has experienced the Sabuk incident revealed that there was a gap between ideological interpretation and effects of the actual incident. In addition, the experience and life of the narrators examined in this paper are not explained at all by the ‘firing point of workers struggles in the 80s’, ‘the situation’ or ‘the struggle’. These oral statements have shown that history has diverse perspectives to reinterpreting incidents and that a number of studies challenging the existing ones are needed.
