개인적 서술에서 공공의 기억으로 : 구술사와 공공역사
이 논문은 역사소비시대에 곤경에 처한 역사학이 시도하고 있는 공공역사를 구술 사와 연결시켜 그 쟁점들을 파악해보고 구술사와 공공역사의 협업 지점들을 찾고자 한다. 이를 위하여 우선 공공역사가 시작된 미국에서 공공역사운동의 발전 과정, 공공 역사의 개념 정의, 실천적 지향점들을 살펴보겠다. 미국에서 학계 밖에서 역사학자들 이 역사 연구방법을 실천하여 과거를 활용하는 공공역사는 역사학의 일부로서 인정받 고 학회가 조직되었고, 학술지도 발간되고 있다. 반면 한국에서는 역사학자들의 통제 를 벗어난 대중역사에 직면하여 역사학의 위기를 극복하고자 역사학자들이 최근에 공 공역사를 논의하게 되었다. 이에 한국 역사학자들의 공공역사 논의들을 이해하기 위 하여 개념 정의와 쟁점들을 중심으로 검토한다. 그런데 한국에서 구술사는 공공역사 로서 시작되었음에도 불구하고 역사학자들의 공공역사 논의에 구술사 연구자들이 아 직은 참여하지 못하고 있다. 역사학자들이 지향하는 공공역사는 근현대사 부분에서 구술사 연구자들의 참여가 없이는 이루어질 수 없다. 따라서 구술사와 공공역사의 관 계를 파악하기 위하여 서양에서 논의된 구술사, 공공역사, 기억연구의 관계를 살펴본 다. 그리고 한국에서 구술사와 공공역사가 협업할 수 있는 지점들을 개인적 기억의 공공 기억화, 개인적 서술과 문화 기억과의 관계, 구술전시와 역사박물관, 구술사와 역사교육에서 살펴보고 최근의 사례들을 중심으로 논의한다. 결론에서 필자는 구술사 와 공공역사는 개개인들이 모두 역사적 존재이고 개인적 삶이 역사성을 가지고 있다 는 인식을 도출해내서 공공 영역에서의 다원적이고 민주적인 과거의 재현을 지향할 수 있다고 본다. 그리고 이미 구술채록이 이루어진 다양한 영역과의 협업을 통해서 구술사 연구자들이 공공역사가로서의 역할을 할 것을 주장한다.

From Personal Narrative to Public Memory : The Interplay Between Oral History and Public History
This article seeks to relate oral history to public history and to locate the sites of cooperation between the two fields in face of the current history consumption era. In order to do so, the author first looks over the historical development of public history movement in the U.S. in terms of its background, definition, and features of practice. Public history movement which began as an historical practice in non-academic fields in the 1970s in the U.S. has grown to organize its association and publish its journal as one subfield of history. Meanwhile, dispute over public history started in South Korea as a way to deal with popular history which has gone out of historians’ control. To understand this situation, the author examines the definitions and issues discussed by Korean historians. Although oral history began as public history in the late 1980s, Korean oral historians are yet to be involved in this discussion. As far as modern and contemporary history is concerned, public history would not be constructed without the help of oral history. For oral historians to participate in public history production, it is necessary to understand the relationship among oral history, public history and memory studies. The author investigates the interrelationship among them in the context of Western academia focusing on the U.S. Lastly the author suggests four sites of cooperation between oral history and public history; first, configurations of pubic memories through private recollections; second, relationship between personal memories and cultural memory; third, display of oral history video clips in history museum; the last, history education by using oral history. The author concludes that oral history and public history will contribute to multiple and democratic representations of the past at the public area through recognition of historicity of personal life located in communities. And the author argues that oral historians should play a role of public historian working with other researchers of various fields who have carried out oral history interviews.
