Life and Labor Experience of Ganghwa Women in the 1950s and 1960s : Focusing on the Oral Life Histories of Ganghwa Female Textile Workers

Park, Hyun Jeong

This paper explains why the oral life history of women who worked in home and textile factories in the Ganghwa area in the 1950s and 1960s led them to participate in textile production labor, and what the spatial structure, temporal structure and working environment of the factory were at the time they experienced it. This research additionally endeavors to find out the places where traditional values and new subjectivity collided according to the change of times, and how the specific area called Ganghwa influenced women's lives during this period. Ganghwa art silk has long been a representative specialty of Ganghwa, which has been sold by boat all over North and South Korea. The explosive growth in demand from the Korean War has led to a massive production at homes and factories. The workers who produced the Ganghwa art silk mainly consisted of refugees who could not return to their hometowns due to the Korean War, young widows who lost their husbands, and poor women who were no longer able to continue their studies. In particular, women who worked in textile factories were not guaranteed basic rights such as low-wage long-term labor, factory working conditions that caused lung disease, absence of annual leave, allowances and severance pay, and industrial accidents. Although they were in a poor situation where they had to endure various hardships, they were progressive and active women who chose the life of a worker who earned salaries while producing quality products, hoping to be engineers who could parallel shoulders with men. Women who were weaving continued their labor lives by weaving fabric or producing hwamunseok as they returned to their homes after marriage. Oral biometrics will help, to supplement the past and present of the Ganghwa Textile Industry and further analyze its impact on the history of Ganghwa Women, Ganghwa Industries, and Korean labor movements. When weaving women returned to their homes upon marriage, they continued their lives by weaving again or producing hwamunseok. Oral life histories will help to supplement the past and present of the Ganghwa textile industry and analyze in more detail the impact they have had on Ganghwa women, Ganghwa industries, and Korean labor movement history.
