그 많던 ‘여공’들은 어디로 갔을까 : 대구 섬유산업 역사에 ‘여성 서사’의 자리 마련하기
한때 섬유도시로 불렸던 대구에는 ‘70~80년대 대구 여성의 열에 일곱은 섬유관련 직종에서 일했다’는 말이 있을 정도로 지역 섬유산업 발전에 있어 여성 노동자는 양적 으로나 질적으로 중요한 역할을 담당했다. 하지만 대구 섬유산업을 집대성한 『대구섬 유산업사』 (1990) 같은 책에는 여성 노동자들의 역할과 기여가 제대로 담기지 않는다. ‘여공’ 혹은 ‘공순이’ 같은 뭉뚱그려진 이름으로 몇 줄 언급되는 게 고작이다. 일부 정 치인과 자본가, 기업인이 주인공이 되는 통사 형식의 역사서술에서 여성 노동자는 조 연을 담당할 뿐이다. 최근 지역사를 재조명하는 움직임이 활발해지면서 지역 사람들의 구체적이고 실질 적인 삶의 경험을 채록하는 구술생애사 연구가 증가하고 있다. 역사에서 소외되어왔 던 여성이 미시적 역사서술에서는 비로소 서사의 주인공으로 등극할 수 있게 된 것이다. 하지만 역사를 기록하는 데 있어 거시적 영역과 미시적 영역은 각자 분리된 채 접합되지 못하고 있다. 여전히 여성의 경험은 미시적이고 주관적이고 개별적이고 개 인적인 차원에서만 다뤄진다. 본 연구는 기존의 역사서술 방식에서 벗어나 거시와 미시, 다수와 소수, 공적 영역 과 사적 영역, 객관과 주관, 남성과 여성 같은 이분법적 분류가 만들어내는 간극을 좁 혀보고자 기획되었다. 지역에서 우리 이웃들이 실제 체험하고 경험했던 다양한 이야 기를 접합시켜 봄으로써 ‘우리 모두’가 주인공이 되는 지역사 쓰기의 가능성을 가늠해 보고자 한다. 이를 위해 지역의 특정 공간과 장소를 중심으로 사건이 전개되는 사실들을 추적하 고 배치하는 장소성(placeness) 중심 연구를 시도한다. 즉, 대구 섬유산업사에 있어 주요 장소였던 대구 북구 칠성동 일대 섬유공장을 배경으로 하여 그곳에서 지역 여성 들이 어떤 삶을 살아왔고 어떤 역할과 기여를 했는지를 살펴볼 수 있는 구체적인 기억과 기록들을 모아 재구성한다. 이는 섬유산업의 역사를 다룬 『대구섬유산업사』 같은 책에 담기지 못했던 섬유산업 여성 종사자들의 서사의 자리를 마련하고 ‘여공’이 아니라 각자의 이름으로 분명하게 호명될 수 있게 하는 방법을 모색해보려는 시도이다.

Where Did All the ‘Factory Girls’ Disappear to? Finding a Position for Female Narrative in the History of Textile Industry in Daegu
Daegu was once called the ‘Textile City.’ Female workers played an important role both quantitatively and qualitatively in the development of the local textile industry, to the extent that there was a saying that “seven out of ten women in Daegu in the 70s and 80s worked in textile-related occupations.” However, books such as 『The History of Daegu Textile Industry』(1990), which compiled the Daegu textile industry, do not properly address the roles and contributions of female workers. Only a few lines are mentioned by lumped names such as “Factory girl” or “Gongsoonhee.” In the historical narrative in which some politicians, capitalists, and businessmen are the main characters, female workers are only assigned supporting roles. Recently, as the movement to re-examine local history has become more active, oral life history research that records the specific and practical life experiences of local people is increasing. A woman who had been marginalized in history was finally able to become the protagonist of the narrative in micro-historical narratives. However, in recording history, the macroscopic and microscopic areas realms are separated from each other and are not connected. Women's experiences are still dealt with only at the microscopic, subjective, individual, and personal level. This study was designed to narrow the gap created by dichotomous classifications, such as macro and micro, majority and minority, public and private, object and subjective, and male and female, breaking away from the existing historical narrative method. This study attempts to shed light on all the stories that our neighbors have actually experienced and experienced in the region, and evaluate the possibility of writing local history in which ‘we all’ are the protagonists. To this end, this research attempts a ‘placeness study’ that tracks and arranges the facts that develop around specific spaces and places in the region. In other words, with the textile factory in Chilseong-dong, which was a major place in the history of the Daegu textile industry, specific memories and records will be collected and reconstructed to see what kind of life and roles and contributions local women have lived there. Through this, this paper seeks to provide position for narrators of female workers in the textile industry, which could not be included in books such as 『The History of Daegu Textile Industry』(1990), which dealt with the history of the textile industry, and to find a way to be called by their own names rather than ‘factory girl’.
