Experience of Female Workers Participating in the Labor Movement and Post-Marriage Activities - Focusing on the Oral life History of Female Workers in Jeonbuk

Choi, Eunyoung

This study discusses the oral life of three female workers who experienced the labor movement at a textile factory in Jeollabuk-do in the 1980s. Their experiences are divided into before and after the Great Workers' Struggle in 1987 and the activities after marriage. Oral history interviewees did not become female labor activists through vertical learning or organizational activities, but voluntarily participated to improve the labor environment and labor union problems they experienced in their daily area of factories. For this reason, they had no choice but to intervene in the problem of infringing on their daily life with people they interacted with, and in this process, their identity as workers was naturally formed. Furthermore, the factory was not simply accepted as a space of labor for a given job to receive wages or as a space of violence suppressed by managers, but as a place where daily and political activities took place together and competed with each other. However, although they were cut off from the labor movement during the period of caring work after marriage, they tried to confirm their identity as female labor activists by expanding the scope from daily life to social problems while engaging in small group activities called ‘Purun Dure (Blue Dure).’ As a result, they became the main pillars of the formation of the Jeonbuk Women's Workers' Association, and later participated in social movements and political activities.
