1980년대 울산지역 여성운동 : 지역의 공업화·민주화과정에서 여성주체 형성을 중심으로
이 연구는 1980년대 울산지역에서 여성운동의 주체들이 형성되는 과정을 지역의 공업화 과정과 민주화 운동과의 관련성 속에서 살펴본다. 지역의 공업화는 여성들에 게도 실업교육의 기회와 일자리를 제공했고 공단의 안과 밖에서 여성노동자들이 늘어 났다. 하지만 여성의 노동은 저임금과 미숙련 노동, 일시적이고 보조적인 노동으로 여 겨졌고 여성노동자들은 직장 내 위계질서에서 낮은 곳으로 위치 지어졌다. 여성 노동 자의 주변화는 이들에 대한 폭력문제로 이어졌다. 1980년대 초반부터 지역의 민주화 운동 단체들에 여성위원회가 만들어졌지만, 여성문제 해결을 위한 활동을 목적으로 하지는 않았다. 지역의 여성운동 여성 주체들이 등장한 것은 87노동자대투쟁 이후였 다. 여성노동자들은 임금, 기숙사, 상여금 문제에 있어서 성차별을 인식하고 이를 개 선하기 위한 목소리를 냈다. 노동자 가족운동으로 노동운동에 참여하는 여성들도 있 었는데, 노동자의 아내들은 모임과 단체를 조직하여 남편의 노동운동을 지원하고 직 접 시위에 참여했다. 여성들의 노동운동과 노동자 가족운동의 경험은 여성들이 개인 의 문제를 구조적인 문제로 인식하는 계기가 되었다. 울산지역이 전국적으로 노동운 동의 중심지로 떠오르면서, 노동운동을 하기 위한 목적으로 울산지역을 찾는 여성 활동가들이 있었다. 이들은 남성중심의 공장문화와 노동운동문화 속에서 배제와 차별의 경험한다. 그리고 노동운동을 위한 여성 조직과정에서 지역의 여성들과 만났고, 여성 들이 겪는 여성문제를 공감하게 되면서 여성운동가로서 정체성을 가지게 된다. 1980 년대 울산지역의 민주화 운동, 특히 노동운동의 과정에서 성장한 여성주체들은 이후 여성학을 공부하는 모임을 거치며 서로 연대하였고 지역 여성운동단체를 조직한다.

Ulsan Women’s Movement in the 1980s : Focus on Formation of Women’s Identity Amidst Industrialization and Democratization
This study examines the process of forming women's movements in Ulsan in the 1980s. According to the 1962 policy, Ulsan became an industrial city, and the number of female workers increased. Female workers were considered unskilled workers with low wages, and their labor was considered temporary. Female workers were marginalized and violence against women arose. They called for a solution to their problems in the 1987 labor movement. Also, many female labor activists came to Ulsan. They experienced a male-dominated labor movement. In this process, they recognized the need for women's movement and became women's activists. Experience with women’s labor movement and laborers’ family movement enabled women to recognize their personal problems as structural ones. As Ulsan emerged as the center of labor movements, many female activists started to move to the city and experience discrimination and exclusion in the male-centric factory and labor movement culture. At the same time, these women also met many other women in the area who shared their issues and by empathizing with these issues, they solidified their identity as female activists. Women, who developed through this labor movement in Ulsan in the 1980s, took further steps to organize meetings to study feminism and local feminist organizations.
