구술자서전의 성과와 과제 : 20세기민중생활사연구단 『한국민중구술열전』을 중심으로
이 글은 구술자서전 시리즈인 『한국민중구술열전』의 형식 구성과 구술 내용을 검토하여, 그 성과와 과제를 도출하는 데 목적을 둔다. 20세기민중생활사연구단이 엮어낸 이 구술자서전 시리즈는 구술생애사 조사 방법론에 기반하여 개인의 생애를 연대기적으 로 담아낸 것으로, 문자와 역사를 가지지 못한 채 살아온 사람들과 그 삶을 역사의 무대 위로 올리려는 의도에서 기획되었다. 『한국민중구술열전』은 1920~1930년대에 출생한 구술자 47명의 구술생애사를 담아낸 의미 있는 자료임에도 불구하고 지금까지 내용 검토를 비롯하여 기본적인 현황조차 정리되지 못하였다. 구술에 담긴 식민지 시기 의 생생한 경험은 더 이상 수집할 수 없는 귀중한 자료이기에 오늘날 더욱 큰 가치를 지니고 있다. 이러한 점이 지금 시점에 이 시리즈를 다시 호명하는 이유이다. 이 글에서 구술자의 속성은 성별 및 출생연도와 출생지역을 기준으로 정리하였다. 이와 같은 속성은 구술자들의 생애 서사를 이해하는 데 배경적인 정보를 제공해줄 뿐만 아니라 그들 세대의 공통적인 특성을 포착할 수 있도록 돕는다. 또한 수집된 총 47명의 구술 내용을 주제별 키워드로 분류하였다. 구술 내용에서 큰 범주가 되는 주제를 식민지 생활상, 전쟁과 이념, 생업과 이동, 지역과 마을, 놀이와 의례, 신세타령의 6가지로 설정하고, 그 하위 범주로 ‘세부 키워드’를 두어 특징적인 사례들을 제시하였다. 이러한 검토를 통해 지역의 차원, 시간의 차원, 구술자서전의 형식 구성의 차원에 서 그 성과와 의의를 도출하고자 하였다. 이 구술자서전 시리즈는 2000년대 초반 구 술사 방법론과 현지조사를 주요 연구 방법으로 채택한 선구적인 인문･사회 분야 연구 사업의 결과물 중 하나로서, 또 후속 연구 세대를 위한 참고 지표로서 충분히 검토되 고 논의될 필요성을 지닌다. 전국적으로 구술생애사 채록이 활발하게 이루어지고 있 지만 구술 내용을 면밀하게 검토하고 그 가치를 검토하는 연구는 드물다. 이 연구가 향후 구술채록의 기획을 면밀하게 디자인하는 데 도움이 되기를 바란다.

Achievements and Challenges of Oral Histories : Chronicles of People’s Lives in the 20th Century
This study reviews the format and content of the oral autobiography series, “Korean Oral Histories: Chronicles of People’s Lives in the 20th Century” and derives its achievements and challenges. Compiled by the Group for the People without History, this series of oral histories is based on the methodology of researching individual life stories, capturing personal life histories in a chronological manner, with the intention of bringing the lives of those who have lived without leaving written records onto the stage of history. Despite being a valuable resource documenting the life stories of 47 oral history subjects born in the 1920s and 1930s, “Korean Oral Histories: Chronicles of People’s Lives in the 20th Century” has not been thoroughly reviewed or even properly cataloged to date. The vivid experiences of the colonial era contained in these oral narratives are invaluable data that can no longer be collected, thus holding even greater significance today. Hence, revisiting this series at this point in time is essential. This study organizes the attributes of oral history subjects based on gender, year of birth, and birthplace. These attributes not only provide background information for understanding the life narratives of the oral history subjects but also help to capture the common characteristics of their generation. Furthermore, the collected oral histories of the 47 oral narratives have been categorized into thematic keywords. The major themes identified within the oral histories include colonial life, war and ideology, livelihoods and mobility, regions and villages, play and rituals, and grievances, each supplemented with specific characteristic examples. This review seeks to derive the achievements and significance of oral histories from the dimensions of regional context, temporal context, and format composition of oral history series. This series of oral histories is one of the outcomes of pioneering research projects in the humanities and social sciences that adopted oral history methodologies and field research in the early 2000s and deserves thorough scrutiny and discussion as a reference for future generations of researchers. While nationwide efforts are underway to compile oral history records, research focusing on meticulous review and evaluation of their contents is scarce. Hopefully, this study will contribute to the careful planning and design of future oral history compilations.
